The Paniyiri Greek Festival celebrates Greek culture at Brisbane’s Musgrave Park and The Greek Club & Convention Centre. Expect Greek-themed food, wine and music, and an attempt at breaking the festival’s own “Zorba Till You Drop” dance marathon record.
The Paniyiri Main Stage in Musgrave Park will host over 20 hours of entertainment over the weekend including the Hellenic Dance Group, appearances from Greek Goddess Effie, Grape Stomping, Greek Dancing with the Stars presented by Channel 7, Honey Puff and Olive Eating Competitions, Zorba Til You Drop, performances by Melbourne-based Greek singer Maria Maroulis and fireworks. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has won a landslide victory over former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi in the Presidential elections in Iran. He beat the reformist Mousavi through his immense charisma, his scintillating oratory and the secret police.
Pre-election polling suggested that Mousavi would likely beat Ahmadinejad, but the ballots told a different story. Al Gore called Mousavi and coached him on his next moves. First, he said, file a lawsuit to recount the ballots, and then challenge the ruling, then drop out of politics, make up a ridiculous junk science theory, sell it to the ruling class and become wealthy. In 1972, after conducting a scientific review, the U.S “National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse” concluded that while marijuana was not entirely safe, its dangers had been “grossly overstated”. Since then, researchers have conducted thousands of studies of humans, animals, and cell cultures. None reveal any findings dramatically different from those described by the National Commission in 1972. Looking at all the happy people at Margarettaville was a nice site. I remember being happy . There is a nice energy in the air when you witness it. I got my doggy Chico in with me since he is a service dog. I had to pick him up so the dancing crowd would not squash the little cutie pie. Being Thanksgiving weekend I had family guests with me and we played pool. I begged out after seeing an entire game went by without me getting one ball in the pocket. My nephew was smooth with his shots and truly impressed me. We visited the largest growing retirement Village in the United States. It’s called the Villages. It closes up aobut 9pm.

Late at night, when my husband’s breathing patterns signal a deep enough sleep that I can extract the remote control from his gender-entitled grasp, I tune in to recorded episodes of the “Oprah” show.
That’s right—I’m not afraid to admit that I am neither too busy nor too evolved to hang on Oprah’s words of wisdom.
I say this knowing full well that, for some of you, the rolling of your eyes is now interfering with your ability to read my column, which does little for a writer dreaming of an Oprah-like following of her own.

Your kids would like a cat. Especially your girl kids. They’ve told you that how many times. But you don’t want to. What use is a cat, you think. But cats are great for building character, like suffering is.
There’s lots of great reasons to get a cat. Here’s 10 just to start with.
1. Cats help to get all that nasty, stuck on varnish off the legs of your furniture. It looked disgusting anyway, all yucky and brown. Bare wood is more natural, and splinters give it that rustic, homely look.

My husband has been known to have some unconventional behavior at times. Some of it is intentional and some of it is not. I especially remember some of his earlier antics.
Men who grew up with much younger siblings are more naturally at ease with taking care of babies. Larry did not have this advantage. It soon became evident the night our friends, Jim and Sally, came over for dinner with their 6 month old child. Wanting to give my husband some practice time in handling babies, Sally handed over her baby to Larry to hold for a few minutes. He was clearly nervous and uncomfortable and didn’t know what to do. When I announced that dinner was ready, Larry who is always the first in line when it comes to food, eagerly turned to put the baby down on the blanket so he could eat. Although my husband was not kid savvy, he was quite familiar with cats, particularly how they can survive falls from great heights. The fact that he was holding a baby and not a cat did not occur to him. He just didn’t make that connection. Thus, Larry bent down so that he was within approximately a foot or so of the blanket and tossed the baby expecting that this little creature would make a perfect landing. Everyone stood in horror as the baby left his arms and clumsily landed on the blanket. We all stood with mouths wide open and out stretched arms hoping that one of us would be able to cushion the impact. Unfortunately, no one could react in time, but we were all quite relieved that the baby was okay and survived my husband’s naïveté.

Inspirational motivational speakers become indispensable when meetings become events where motivation is in short supply, the underachievers are pulled up, and competitors are lauded grudgingly for their successes. Keynote laughter speakers lighten up the atmosphere and put things in perspective in business meetings where big monetary figures are put on the tables, falling graphs are dissected to tiny atoms to be analyzed, and achievements are celebrated briefly only to facilitate the announcement of the next set of ambitious and sometimes over-ambitious business goals.
Meetings are seriously starved of humor. Insiders that are speaking at the meeting can never have the hold over the audience as trained corporate keynote speakers can, because they are always perceived either as bosses or sub-ordinates. In case the speakers from within the organization are enjoying their speeches, well in all probability, they alone have the privilege of doing so while the rest of the audience is struggling precariously to stay awake.
